VEHARI, Feb 4: The Central Board of Revenue’s decision to dissociate Vehari from the Multan Income Tax zone and shift it to the Sahiwal zone is a glaring example of government’s apathy towards public.

The district comprises three circles. The Vehari-Burewala and Mailsi circle have little trade relations with Sahiwal, which is about 150 kilometres from here, while Vehari has strong trade and geographical relations with Multan.

The decision will create multiple problems for more than 15,000 Vehari district tax payers. They travel daily to Multan, which takes them an hour and 30 minutes.

Before the shifting, the revised petitions of the income tax assessments were filed with assessing officers. Now these petitions will be filed with the commissioner in Faisalabad, which is about 300 kilometres from here.

Talking to Dawn on Tuesday, representatives of various trade organizations said they would experience much inconvenience in the shape of tiresome travelling and financial loss. They added: “Legal advisers and agents will demand high fee to travel to Sahiwal and Faisalabad.”

Traders Muhammad Rafiq Chaudhry, Maqbool Ahmad, Shaikh Saleem and Haji Khalid Javed have demanded the authorities concerned to restore the Vehari tax zone’s affiliation with Multan.

DEATH SENTENCE: District and Sessions Judge Abdul Waheed Khan on Tuesday handed down death sentence on four counts to a father’s killer.

Convict Muhammad Asghar will also have to pay Rs200,000 fine to the heirs, or spend six months in prison.

The prosecution said Asghar killed his father Haji Nawaz, cousin Shahbaz and his (cousin’s) mother Mumtaz Mai over property dispute at Tibba Sultanpur two years ago.

SCHOLARSHIP EXAMS: The scholarship examination for class 5 and 8 will be held here on Feb 26 and 28, respectively.

Executive District Education Officer Muhammad Ali Tahir on Tuesday directed the educational institutions’ heads to submit their students’ admission forms without fee at his office.
