HYDERABAD, Nov 26: Over three dozen students of Mehran University of Engineering and Technology Jamshoro staged a protest demonstration outside the Hyderabad press club here on Monday and announced boycott of the remaining papers and practical of the scheduled examination and classes of the next semester.

Talking to newsmen, they said that 53 students of 98 batch, mechanical department, appeared in the second semester examination of third year starting from November 14.

They, however, said that paper of fluid machinery held on November 20 was totally out of course as a result of which not a single student including position holders were able to solve any question.

Consequently, they said the paper was dropped and talks were held with the concerned teacher who had set the paper, the dean, the chairman and the vice chancellor.

The students claimed that these officials agreed with their objections and offered to hold the paper on the same day with some amendments but later they retracted and decided not to reconduct the examination.

They accused the university administration of greed and alleged that its teachers were interested only in tuition.

They said that they had also boycotted Monday’s statistics paper and announced that they will not appear in the remaining papers and practical of the scheduled examination and will boycott classes unless their controversial paper was reconducted and the date for it was officially announced before November 28.

They also threatened to take the matter to court against the university administration.

They regretted that the university administration seemed to be least interested in the future and welfare of the students.

VARSITY VERSION: The Mehran University administration in a press release here on Monday (after six days) clarified that the news that the students had boycotted fluid machinery paper on November 20 was incorrect.

The press release said that 16 students appeared in the examination (total number of students is 53) and added that even on Monday 46 students appeared in the paper of statistics.

The press release claimed that the examinations were being conducted in the university as per schedule and advised the students who had not appeared in the examination, to appear in their papers to save their time.

Meanwhile, leaders of Sindh Taraqqi Passand Students Federation, Mehran University unit, Shahnawaz, Irfan Abro, Maqbool Rind and Rashid Ghanghro, in a joint statement, said that in order to hide its own efficiency, the MUET administration was trying to destroy the future of the students.
