FAISALABAD, Feb 1: A Polymerase Chain Reaction-based facility has been provided for detection of morbilli viruses and diagnosis of rinderpest at the National Institute for Biotechnology and Genetic Engineering (NIBGE) through an International Atomic Energy Agency project.

According to NIBGE sources, morbilli viruses cause measles in humans, which remains one of the most significant causes of death in young children particularly in the less developed parts of the world, and the most devastating rinderpest in cattle.

TRAINING COURSE: The NIBGE will also organize a course to train people in the molecular diagnosis of Rinderpest and other morbilli viruses from Feb 3 to 7.

University of Veterinary and Animal Sciences Lahore vice-chancellor Prof Dr Manzoor Ahmed Qureshi will inaugurate the course while Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission member (Biosciences) Dr Kausar Abdullah Malik will be the chief guest at the concluding ceremony.—APP
