THIS is with reference to the letter ‘Ideology of Pakistan’ (April 9). At least I am very clear about the ideology of Pakistan.

Pakistan was created for providing better economic opportunities to the Muslims of India and hence the only ideology of Pakistan worth pursuing is the well-being and prosperity of the people of Pakistan.

Many phoney and sham ideas are being propagated in the name of ideology, neglecting the real ideology, that is the well being of the common man.

Let us not waste time in discussing some imaginary and pretentious interpretations of ideology and focus on a single-point agenda of ‘alleviation of poverty’.

This is the most realistic and practical enunciation of the ideology of Pakistan.

Ulema’s role

A HEATED debate is on in the media regarding the ‘real ideology’ of Pakistan. This confusion started only after the ‘Objectives Resolution’ was adopted and made part of the constitution six months after the death of the Quaid.

Nobody, even prime minister Liaquat Ali Khan, could introduce it during the lifetime of the Quaid, who would have otherwise opposed it. It is a historical fact that the Ulema-i-Hind and the Jamaat-i-Islami campaigned against the Muslim League, led by the Quaid, over the issue of Pakistan.

The ulema’s opposition was so strong that Mufti Mehmud is on record to have declared that he was not associated with the sin of creating Pakistan (Nawa-i-Waqt, Sept 13, 1978). The Jamaat-i-Islami called Pakistan ‘Napakistan’, and the government established by the Quaid ‘kafirana government’ (From Jinnah to Zia, pp136-137).

If we believe for a moment that Pakistan was established on the basis of religion, then why did the Ulema-i-Islami oppose Pakistan?
