HANDING over Gwadar port operations to China is a promising start to the otherwise dysfunctional strategic asset of Pakistan.

The Balochistan governor has, however, asked the contracting parties to protect the rights of the locals.

I would suggest the government should come up with a formula to ensure that instead of paying royalties to corrupt sardars of certain areas, the amount should instead be spent by a government-appointed authority on the welfare of the people, jobs to be created for the locals and healthcare facilities to be brought up rather than wasting all that royalty fee by filling up the pockets of those wealthy warlords.
