ISLAMABAD, March 1: The PPP-led government, which is going to complete its five-year term on March 16, is considering replacing Intelligence Bureau (IB) director general, sources in the Prime Minister’s House told Dawn on Friday.

“Replacement of incumbent IB chief Akhtar Gorchani is on the cards,” said a source close to the prime minister.

The source said the issue of replacement of the country’s top civilian intelligence agency’s head was also discussed at a meeting chaired by the prime minister on Friday.

Meanwhile, there is a media report that the government has removed Mr Gorchani and he had been replaced by Joint Director of the same organisation Abdul Wadood Shah.

The reports said Abdul Wadood Shah, who is presently serving as a joint director of the organisation in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, has been appointed on the order of Prime Minister Raja Pervez Ashraf.

However, Prime Minister’s Spokesman Shafqat Jalil said the prime minister had so far not issued any such order but hastened to add that there was a possibility of replacement of the IB head in the near future.

Mr Gorchani had assumed charge of his office on July 13, 2012, when Prime Minister Ashraf removed almost all top officials of the organisation appointed by the former prime minister Yousuf Raza Gilani.

It is pertinent to mention here that Leader of Opposition in the NA, Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan, on January 24 had demanded of the government to replace all governors, top bureaucrats, including IB chief, before the forthcoming elections as they were appointed by the PPP-led government.
