LANDI KOTAL, Jan 20: Residents of Chora village in Khyber Agency have agreed to voluntarily destroy the poppy crop cultivated over an estimated 1000 Kanal land.

An agreement between the tribal elders and political administration was reached on Monday during a grand jirga convened at the remote Chora village.

Poppy crop was cultivated at Malik Daud Killi, Mohammed Hussain Killi and Shuja Malik Killi. Elders of the area assured the administration that the cultivated, although in nascent stage, would be destroyed within three days time.

Elders of the area on the occasion demanded of the government that a basic health unit be constructed in the area apart from the provision of electricity to Chora village.

The political agent, Dr Fida Wazir, assured the Chora residents that six micro hydel generators would be provided to village.

He also promised provision of fine quality wheat and onion seeds to the farmers of the area in order to refrain them from poppy cultivation in tribal areas.

The administrative officials on the occasion also announced the upgradation of a primary school to middle level and a middle to high school.
