Mushahid condemns hanging

Published February 10, 2013

ISLAMABAD, Feb 10: Senator Mushahid Hussain Sayed, the secretary general of Pakistan Muslim League, has condemned the hanging of Afzal Guru in India and urged the government to raise its voice on the issue.

He also condemned a statement of Indian leader P. Chidambaram about the Afghan border and said the matter should be raised before the international community and human rights organisations.

Talking to media personnel, he said that even the Supreme Court of India in its judgment of Aug 5, 2005, against Afzal Guru had made it clear that it was awarding the death sentence “because the collective conscience of society will only be satisfied if capital punishment is awarded”.

He said the inhuman act of hanging the Kashmiri activist without even allowing him to meet his family had been condemned by prominent Indian intellectuals like Arundhati Roy.

He expressed solidarity and support to the hunger strike of Kashmiri freedom fighter Yasin Malik and said there was a wave of resentment not just among the Kashmiris but also among the people of Pakistan.
