UMERKOT, Feb 5: The Kunri police recovered 54 bonded labourers of the Bheel community here on Tuesday in a raid on an agricultural farm of a landlord near Kunri.

A relative of the labourers, Mohib Bheel, had filed a petition in the district and sessions court of Umerkot, seeking recovery of seven families, comprising 54 members, from the agricultural farm of the landlord.

The police raided the farm and recovered all of them, including 29 children and 11 women. Some of the peasants were identified as Shirimati Kareema, Amroo, Ramesh, Lalo and Khamiso.

They told Dawn that they had been working on the farmland for two years, but they had not been provided proper food, health and educational facilities. Even their accounts were manipulated and they were not given their due share in crops.

The recovered peasants will be produced in court on Wednesday.
