Sewage problems
Sir, It has been over a month since the main Dalmia road going to Shanti Nagar has been flooded with gutter water. Due to the stagnant water a foul smell has spread throughout the area while it has also caused problems for commuters. The area has become the main breeding ground for mosquitoes as well, which means the threat of malaria and dengue is ever-present.
The reason for this overflow of sewage is the blockage of manholes of the area. We have lodged several complaints with the KMC but they are not responding. We tried to solve the problem through local sanitary workers, but they said they needed machines to clean the manholes, which only the city government possess.
Therefore, we would like to request the municipal authorities to kindly have the manholes of Dalmia cleaned immediately with machines so that the roads can become free of filthy water and life can return to normality.
MOHAMMAD MUKHTIAR Dalmia
II Sir, The sewerage system in the Garden area is in need of urgent attention of the authorities concerned as most neighbourhoods are overflowing with sewage and littered with garbage. It seems that the agencies concerned have left the populace to fend for itself as repeated complaints have failed to jolt them into action.
Through these columns I request them to shake off their indifference so that residents are spared the torment of negotiating their way through filth and garbage.

Reckless drivers
Sir, The tendency of driving vehicles on the wrong side of the track is increasing day by day. The people, especially undisciplined youngsters, just do not care about traffic rules, which are blatantly violated.
These reckless drivers are creating a lot of problems for law-abiding drivers. Mostly motorcyclists and often also motorists come face to face on the wrong side of the traffic flowing in an orderly manner on the correct side.
These law-breakers not only risk their own lives but also of those who abide by the law. And there is no one to challenge them. The traffic police constables are rarely seen anywhere and even if they are around, they hardly take any action.
Who will teach discipline to these drivers who neither care about their own lives or those of others?

Lack of street lights
Sir, Lack of street lights in working condition is a common problem in countless localities across Karachi. In particular, I would like to point out the situation in North Nazimabad’s Block C.
Shahrah-i-Humayun, the road connecting the Pahar Gunj roundabout to the KDA roundabout in the above-mentioned block, becomes a ‘no-go’ area after sundown due to the absence of working street lamps. Residents are unable to understand what is preventing the local administration from fixing these lights so that they are restored to perfect working order.
As it is, the area has become quite volatile due to the nearby Kati Pahari. When complete darkness shrouds the main road after sunset due to non-working street lamps, the locality becomes a playground for criminals and muggers, who prey on the area residents and passers-by with absolute freedom.
The citizens of the neighbourhood ask the authorities concerned to fix the streetlights — paid for by our taxes — forthwith.
