THIS is in response to the letter ‘Beheadings in Saudi Arabia’ (Jan 23). If we look at the crime rate in Saudi Arabia, this country is far better than many democratic countries in the world and where capital punishment has been abolished.
The reason is that speedy justice and punishments can sow fear in the minds and hearts of future perpetrators.
Islam has clearly defined punishment in the light of Shariat and those are quite practical.
If one is caught stealing, the fingers are chopped off, followed by wrists if the crime is repeated and eventually a complete beheading.
For serious crimes like carrying drugs into the Kingdom or committing murder there obviously is a harsh punishment which serves as a lesson for all to remember.
We need similar punishments in Pakistan as the current judicial system has completely failed to punish the perpetrators.
