Historical sites

Published January 18, 2013

LAHORE is known for its distinctive and unique historical sites. Badshahi Masjid and the Lahore Fort attract the attention of a visitor when he crosses the Ravi bridge … the Shalamar Bagh, the tomb of Jahangir, Kamran’s Baradari, the whole walled city and the mausoleums of saints are amongst the distinctive characteristics of Lahore.

The logic behind setting up an archaeology department was to protect and preserve old buildings and historical sites. The question is sometimes raised that since the government lacks the resources for the construction of new buildings, how can funds be generated for archaeological sites? We humbly state that all over the world, several international bodies besides sister organisations of the UN give huge grants to experts to visit such sites and not only suggest measures but also provide practical assistance for the their upkeep. Where there’s a will there’s a way. The paucity of funds is nothing but a lame excuse…. …

The condition of the Fort built by Akbar the Great has been deteriorating. …About a year and half ago, restoration and rehabilitation work became inevitable and was started.… But the work was stopped all of a sudden owing to what some quarters believe was a shortage of funds. However, the officials deputed for the Fort restoration plan have come up with a novel justification: the severely cold weather. They argue that lower temperatures are hindering the repair of tiles in Shahjahan’s garden.

However, the officials are unable to justify the halting of engraving work near the Baradari and the repair of the royal bath. Construction material scattered around at these sites causes inconvenience to visitors. The authorities should immediately take note as incomplete work may result in irreparable loss.—(Jan 17)
