CHITRAL, Jan 7: The Sarhad Rural Support Programme (SRSP) will carry out a feasibility study and develop water resources in Chitral town so as to provide electricity to the residents, who have been hit by severe energy crisis.

This was stated by SRSP district programme officer Tariq Ahmed while speaking at a meeting of elders of the town here the other day. He said that on the request of people of the town, the programme’s chief executive officer Masoodul Mulk had directed for carrying out feasibility study of water potential available in the streams of Chitral Gol, Jughur and Denina.

He said that a hydropower project of 500 kilowatts (kW) had been planned at Chitral Gol to electrify the main areas of district headquarters and funds for this purpose had been earmarked.

He said that the organisation had already provided electricity in many households in remote villages, including the Kalash valley.

Speaking on the occasion, president of local Power Action Committee, Hayatullah Khan, praised the programme for its initiative to provide electricity to the town.

He said that after being disappointed with the government and elected representatives, the committee approached the SRSP officials who accepted their request.
