Towards deconstructing history

Published November 18, 2012

ISLAMABAD, Nov 17: History is a jumble of information pitched in by writers of various viewpoints, friends and foes alike.

It is important to deconstruct history from western influences, so that the new generation can have a better understanding of the subject.

This was said by acting President of International Islamic University, Islamabad (IIUI) Dr Sajidur Rehman, during the concluding ceremony of the three day international conference on “Literary Present and Postcolonial Condition”, organised by the Department of English, IIUI.

Dr Rehman said: “I am sure this assembly of scholars would have given due critical thought to the theory of ‘Islamisation’ of knowledge presented by famous postcolonial Muslim thinkers like Ismail, Raji and al-Farouqi.”

He said it was the foremost responsibility of our scholars and researchers to guide young scholars by reconstructing the painstaking research that had been destroyed by colonisers. This included literature, system of education, social welfare, and the spiritual system for both Muslims and non-Muslims, he added.

Dr Rehman said: “It is the responsibility of the department of English literature and others to take advantage of the presence of scholars of various disciplines in this international seat. We need to learn and explore the rich literary and intellectual heritage of the Muslims.”
