RAWALPINDI, Jan 3: Tomar-Rawalpindi Conductance Main for supplying water to Rawalpindi from Khanpur Dam has been completed at a cost of Rs325 million, officials said here on Friday.

The 19km-long pipeline has a capacity of carrying 14.6 million gallons of water per day for the city. One of the terminal sections of the pipeline near Shamsabad is being inaugurated on January 9.

The director of Project Management Unit, Brig Habib Rehman (retired), told this reporter that the project had been completed and only some minor works remained to be taken care of.

The pipeline has four “injection points” at Khayaban-i-Sir Syed, Pirwadhai, Public Park and Shamsabad and is projected to be benefiting the localities of Satellite Town, Khayaban, Muslim Town, Pirwadhai, Dhoke Kala Khan, Khurram Colony and Shamsabad.

Though the pipeline has been completed, it may not be of immediate benefit for the residents of Rawalpindi, as the city that is supposed to get 14.6 MGD out of this project would get merely one MGD because of non-availability of water at Khanpur.

Meanwhile, an amount of Rs330 million has been spent on the rehabilitation of the existing Rawal Lake Filtration Plant and enhancing its treatment capacity. The filtration plant will now have a capacity of 28 MGD against a previous capacity of 21 MGD.

Mohallah Raja Sultan, Eidgah Mohallah, Raja Bazaar, Ittehad Colony, Ratta Amral, Bohr Bazaar, Bhabra Bazaar, Kirtarpura, Dhoke Ratta, Committee Chowk and Liaquat Bagh are supposed to be the main beneficiaries of the increased water supply from Rawal Dam.

Another amount of Rs620 million is being spent on 11 projects aimed at extension of water distribution system and improvement in the already existing structures.

Nine projects, officials said, had been completed, while work was under progress on the remaining two.
