LAHORE, Oct 24: The Pakistan Muslim League-N alleges that the Pakistan People’s Party wants to divert attention from its poor performance since 2008 by character assassination of the PML-N leadership in the wake of the Asghar Khan case.

Speaking at a press conference here on Wednesday, Deputy Secretary-General Ahsan Iqbal said the PPP had to be answerable for its “corruption, inefficiency and economic crisis”.

He alleged that the PPP wished to delay elections but the PML-N would not allow it.

He said character assassination of the PML-N leadership would do no good to the PPP and it would face defeat in the elections because of the federal government’s poor performance.

He said the PPP had a history of making secret deals with dictators on the promise of absolving them of their crime of holding in abeyance the Constitution. Ahsan said the PML-N welcomed the Supreme Court’s decision and was even ready to face a probe commission comprising President Asif Zardari, Pervaiz Elahi, Rehman Malik and Imran Khan.

He said the Charter of Democracy clearly contained a Truth and Reconciliation Commission to determine the role of secret agencies and establishment in politics. But, he regretted, the PPP government was avoiding formation of the panel because it was scared of such investigations.

Meanwhile, PML-N leader Tariq Azim says the PPP is trying to find excuses to avoid general elections, but his party will resist any such move with full force.

Talking to the media here, he pointed out that on one hand Federal Information Minister Qamar Zaman Kaira was saying that there would be no military action in North Waziristan, yet at the same time he contradicted himself when he stated that general elections would not be affected, when an operation is launched in the agency.
