LAHORE, Oct 22: Two alleged criminals were killed while a police constable was injured during a ‘crossfire’ between four armed suspects and police in Shahdara area on Monday.Police claimed the suspects had opened fire on them when they tried to stop them (suspects) near Begum Kot.

Shahdara circle DSP Mian Khan told Dawn some policemen on patrol duty signalled a car to stop near the cattle market at around 6am. The car-occupants opened fire on the police and injured constable Tabassum.

Policemen returned the fire and managed to burst the rear tyres of the car, but the driver kept driving the car.The police started a chase and found the car abandoned at some distance along a drain near 25 Number Stop.

The DSP said three suspects were seen fleeing and firing on police.

The police found a suspect lying dead in the car and managed to shoot down another fleeing suspect on Bund Road. Two others managed their escape.

Khan said the police seized two weapons from the spot and established at a later stage that the car in use of the suspects was stolen from Old Anarkali police some time ago.

The DSP said the police identified the deceased as 25-year-old Talib of Farrukhabad, Shahdara, and 26-year-old Ilyas of Jiya Moosa, Shahdara, and traced against them not less than 28 cases of dacoity, robbery, theft and other offences in Lahore and other districts.

He said Talib was also included in the Top 10 list of Nankana police, adding the suspects used to loot people while using stolen vehicles.

He said their two runaway accomplices were identified as Akbar and Sultani.

Meanwhile, the police shifted the bodies for autopsy and registered a case.

ELECTROCUTED: A 20-year-old labourer was electrocuted while fixing shuttering at an under-construction property in L-Block of Sabzazar on Monday.

Imran Nazir of Hanjarwal touched a live wire accidentally and suffered fatal shocks. He was pronounced dead at hospital.
