LARKANA, Jan 1 : The district Nazim on Wednesday attributed the stoppage of development works to interruption of funds by the provincial government.

The district Nazim, Khursheed Ahmed Junejo, was speaking during a meeting, attended by the Nazimeen, Naib Nazimeen and councillors of the 11 union councils of the Larkana city as well as the taluka Nazim, which was chaired by the district Nazim.

He stressed on the need for regular meetings between the elected representatives of the local government.

The district council complained about proliferation of encroachments in the city, paucity of funds, deteriorating law and order situation and halting of development works and poor sanitary conditions.

Earlier, the district Nazim, Khursheed Ahmed Junejo, warned the chief officer to remove encroachments from the city within the next two days or face termination from service.

According to a source in the local government, this was the first meeting of its kind.

He said that the participants of the meeting severely criticized the taluka Nazim, Nazeer Shaikh, for disrespecting the elected representatives and trying to create misunderstandings among them.

They also criticized him for ineffective control over the sanitary staff and the loose grip over the city affairs, which had created unhygienic conditions in the city, damage of roads and poor street light system.

He blamed political interference for the deteriorating law and order situation in the Larkana district, saying that the local body representatives should closely monitor the situation.

The meeting decided to undertake all the development works, which had been tendered during the fourth phase of the Khushhal Pakistan Programme.

The participants of the meeting were informed that Larkana’s drainage system needed early repairs, which would cost Rs450 million while Rs68 million were needed for the repairs of the city roads.

The district Nazim asked the Chief Sanitary Officer to remove garbage and waste from the city within a week or he would be relieved of his duties.

Next such meeting will be held on Thursday, sources said, to discuss issues related with the union councils.

The Naib Nazim of the district, Nazeer Ahmed Bughio, and the chief whip of the district council, Amir Bakhsh Gaad, also attended the meeting.
