LAHORE, Oct 12: The Pakistan Muslim League-N took out a rally and set up a protest camp here on Friday to mark ouster of its government in a military coup back in October 1999.
The rally led by Punjab Assembly Deputy Speaker Rana Mashhood started from Gulshan-e-Ravi and terminated at Charring Cross on The Mall where the party had already set up a protest camp.
Speaking to the participants, Rana Mashhood said Oct 12 would always be remembered as a black day in the country’s history when Gen Pervez Musharraf (retired) ousted a democratically elected government, plunging Pakistan into a “dark night”.
He urged all the pro-democracy patriotic forces to jointly work for aborting any future misadventure against democracy as the country’s survival, integrity and progress depend upon continuity of democratic process, supremacy of law and accepting the people’s right to rule.
Lawyers: Members of PML-N Lawyers’ Forum also staged a protest demonstration at GPO Chowk and denounced the ouster of Nawaz- led government on Oct 12, 1999, by then military chief Pervez Musharraf.
Dozens of lawyers led by Khwaja Mahmood marched from the Lahore High Court to GPO Chowk. They chanted slogans against Musharraf and demanded death penalty for him for his extra-constitutional actions. They also burnt an effigy of Musharraf.
The lawyers also offered prayers for early recovery of Malala. — Staff Reporter
