DADU, Dec 31: A large number of people on Tuesday staged a demonstration in Johi to protest against non-payment of Zakat to the poor people of the area.

The demonstrators, mostly activists of political parties and non-governmental organizations, were led by Niaz Hussain, Zulfiqar, Abdul Sattar and Ghulam Haider.

Later, the protesters said accused the chairman of the district Zakat Committee and the district Zakat officer of receiving 25 per cent on every cheque from the Mustahiqeen.

They said that no one was paid the charity if he did not pay 25 per cent of the received amount to the Zakat officials.

APPEAL: The district Nazim, Malik Asad Sikandar, the PPP MNA from Dadu, Rafique Ahmed Jamali, the PPP MPA Marvi Mazharul Haq, the president of the district bar association, Mohammad Ramzan Khushik, and the president of the district chamber of commerce, Ghulam Shah Malkani, have sent separate telegrams to the chairman of the PTCL requesting him to attach the Dadu telegraph division with STR-I, Hyderabad Region, instead of STR-V, Sukkur.

They have also urged the telecommunications authorities for granting mobile phone facility in the district.

A large number of people from Johi taluka on Tuesday staged a demonstration on the Dadu-Johi road near the camp office of the BHP oil exploration company.

They were protesting against the multinational oil and gas company for not providing jobs to the local people.

The demonstrators were led by Din Mohammad, Gul Hassan and Imamdin.

Speaking on the occasion, they said that the officials of the BHP oil and gas company had appointed over 500 people from the NWFP, Punjab and Balochistan.

They accused the company of not carrying out development work in their area besides depriving the local people of job opportunities.

ARRESTED: The police on Tuesday arrested two outlaws, Mohammad Mazari and Ghulam Mustafa Khoso, near Mehar town after an encounter.

The police have also recovered two pistols and 20 bullets from their possession.

CRUSHED: An eight-year-old boy, Shahbaz Panhwar, was killed and another boy, Sardar Ali, was injured on Monday night after being hit by a Sehwan-bound coach.

Both the boys were crossing the road near Sehwan.

The injured boy was taken to the LMU Hospital in Jamshoro. The driver of the coach escaped from the crime scene.

POLICE TORTURE: The Sajjada Nasheen of Pir Nango Faqeer of the Siyal village, Gul Sher Faqeer, on Tuesday accused the SHO of the Rukan police station, of having arrested him without any reason besides having tortured the women and children in his house during a raid on his house two days ago.

He said that the police had broken the furniture in his house.

He also accused the police of having compelled him to withdraw from a plot.
