ISLAMABAD, Sept 25: The Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) has decided to impound smuggled vehicles with the help of Frontier Corps and other law-enforcement agencies.

The customs department has obtained countrywide motor registration data to ascertain genuineness of such vehicles. However, a loophole in the plan is that there is currently no defined punishment for those keeping smuggled or other vehicles with unpaid duty.

“The possibility of action will be explored against private premises and warehouses in different areas, including the tribal region, where non-duty paid vehicles are stored,” the strategy paper said.

The decision has been taken against the backdrop of orders by the Supreme Court on Sept 6 to contain the use of smuggled vehicles, particularly in Balochistan, because many such vehicles and motorcycles were being used in terrorism.

The FBR has empowered the Frontier Corps, Police, Levies Force, Coast Guards and Rangers to impound all smuggled vehicles.
