KARACHI, Sept 7: The drug court issued on Friday a warrant for the arrest of a deputy superintendent of police over his non-appearance in court in connection with a case and also issued a show-cause notice to a drug inspector for not producing case property in two separate cases pertaining to the sale of substandard and unauthorised drugs.

The police had raided a medical store within the remit of the Khawaja Ajmer Nagri police station in January 2006 and arrested Shahid for operating without a licence while the seized drugs were also found to be substandard.

At that time, Deputy Superintendent Police Javed Abbas was posted as town investigating officer of New Karachi and was a prosecution witness in the case.

However, despite repeated notices issued by the court the police officer did not turn up to testify in the court.

In the other case, a drug inspector raided a medical store in Badin district in December 2010 and recovered sample drugs meant for physicians and booked Mohammad Hussain and Iqbal Ali under the Drugs Act.

The drug inspector of Badin, Ahmed Ali Sathio, was the complainant in the case and on pervious hearings the court directed him to produce the case property, but he failed to comply with the court order.

The three-member drug court headed by Saathi M. Ishaq issued a non-bailable warrant for the DSP through the additional inspector general of police for Sept 19 and issued the show-cause notice to the drug inspector through the chief drug inspector of Sindh for Sept 27.

Meanwhile, the same court sentenced three people till the rising of the court in as many cases after they entered into a guilty plea.

The court imposed a total fine of Rs175,000 on Imtiaz Ahmed, Haider Zaidi and Najma Praveen of a Hyderabad-based pharmaceutical company.

In case of a default, the convicts would undergo six-month imprisonment.

They were charged with making spurious medicine and violating the drugs laws.

The trial of eight other cases was still pending against the management of the pharmaceutical firm in question.—Staff Reporter
