LAHORE, Sept 4: An alleged robber was killed in a ‘shootout’ with police near Gandi Bambian, Bund Road, early on Tuesday.

Shadbagh police claimed the suspect was looting citizens along with his accomplice shortly before policemen approached them. Police inquiries showed that two robbers riding a bike were looting cash and valuables from passers-by Shaukat Butt and Haji Jameel when four Mohafiz Force officials, led by ASI Arif, suddenly reached the spot.

The suspects after seeing police opened fire which was returned.

The suspects took refuge behind a wall and kept firing on police. More force from nearby police stations arrived at the scene and cordoned of the area.

After firing stopped from the suspects’ side, officials found one of the accused dead and the other missing. What police claimed to have seized from the spot were Rs8,000, two cell phones, a pistol and three magazines.

Police later identified the victim as Waheed alias Nangay Paion of Makkhanpura who was wanted in more than 100 cases of dacoity and robbery.

ROBBERS INJURED: Nawab Town police arrested two robbers who were injured in crossfire with police and seized their weapons on Tuesday.

The Nawab Town SHO was present at a makeshift picket near Expo Centre when his subordinates signalled a motorcycle to stop for checking.

The two suspects suddenly opened fire on police who ‘luckily’ survived. Policemen returned fire and managed to injure the suspects.

They were taken into custody by police who also seized two pistols, as many cell phones and the bike.

Police said the suspects identified as Naeem of Raiwind and Naveed of Chuhng confessed to more than 40 incidents of robbery in areas of Nawab Town.

SHO Qadeer Ahmad said Naveed was stated to be critical at Jinnah Hospital.

He claimed that a few complainants visited the hospital and recognised the victims as `outlaws’ in their cases.

ROBBERIES: Two robbers shot at and wounded Nargis Bibi on resistance and snatched her purse in Burki police limits.

Four robbers barged into the house of Mobeenur Rehman in Nawab Town police limits, held all family members at gunpoint and looted cash, jewellery and other valuables worth Rs1.2 million. They also took away the victim’s car. —Staff Reporter
