CHAKWAL, Sept 3: Director-General of Benazir Income Support Programme (BISP) Dr Azam Saleem was killed while his driver and servant were injured in a road accident on Monday.

Two other persons who rushed to help them were also slightly injured after being hit by another car.

According to sources, DG BISP Dr Azam Saleem, his driver Shahid Masih and a private servant, Zaman, were on their way to Lahore on a Vigo van.

When they were passing Bhatti Gujjar village on the Motorway the van skidded on the slippery road, rammed into a tree and overturned. Dr Azam Saleem died on the spot while Shahid Masih and Zaman were injured.

Two persons rushed to the scene and were taking the victims out of the van when another car hit them.

The driver of that car escaped from the scene. The accident occurred at 8am.

The body of Dr Azam Saleem and injured driver and servant were brought to District Headquarters Hospital (DHQ) by Rescue 1122.

District Coordination Officer Ahmad Aziz Tarar along with other officers also reached the hospital. Driver Shahid Masih was immediately referred to Rawalpindi due to his critical condition.

The body of Dr Azam Saleem was dispatched to Lahore where he was laid to rest on Monday evening.

“Dr Saleem expired before we reached the scene,” Kamran Rasheed, the district in charge of Rescue 1122, told Dawn adding that he received injuries to his head and other parts of his body.

“It was heavily raining at the time which made the road slippery. The vehicle was in speed and it slipped and smashed into a tree,” Investigation Officer at Kallar Kahar Police Station Malik Kazim told Dawn.

Dr Azam Saleem had also served as DCO Chakwal from 2004 and 2006.
