KARACHI, Sept 3: A former policeman was killed and his accomplices fled during what police described as an encounter with car lifters in the old city area on Monday.

The police claimed to have found and impounded a car snatched within the remit of the Bahadurabad police station.

Acting on the information provided by a tracking company, the police reached Hasrat Mohani Colony within the remit of the Mithadar police station to locate the car and a shootout with the suspected car lifters ensued.

One of the suspects, Shafeeq, son of Sadiq, was seriously wounded, while his accomplices managed to escape leaving the car behind, the police said.

They added that Shafiq was rushed to the Civil Hospital Karachi where he died during treatment.

It emerged later during the course of investigation that the suspect was a former police constable, who had been dismissed from service.

Inspector Sanaullah of the anti-car-lifting cell said that the car had been snatched within the remit of the Bahadurabad police station. He said that an FIR (180/2012) was lodged at the Mithadar police station on his complaint.

Body found The body of a middle-aged man was found in the hilly area of Manghopir, police said.

They added that the body was spotted at a deserted place within the remit of the Manghopir police station.

The victim was later identified as Jan Mohammad, 55.

The police shifted the body to Abbasi Shaheed Hospital. The victim had suffered a head injury, they said.

The police investigators said the victim was a resident of Allah Bachayo Goth and had left home on Sunday night to attend a religious gathering in the Manghopir area.
