LAHORE, Aug 27: Two alleged robbers were killed in a shootout with the police on Ghazi Road in Factory Area early on Monday.

Police said one of them was involved in bank robberies in Sahiwal region.

Cantonment SP (Operations) Maroof Safdar Wahla told Dawn that police received an emergency call by one Aamir that four robbers, riding two bikes, snatched cash and jewellery from him and his mother at DD-Block, DHA Commercial Market around 2:30am and fled towards Ghazi Road.

He said Factory Area police set up a picket on Ghazi Road near the Punjab Housing Society’s main entrance and signalled two motorcycles to stop.

The suspects opened fire. Police started chasing the suspects and an encounter took place.

The SP said during the crossfire two suspects were killed on the spot while two others managed their escape while firing at police.

He said the dead were identified as Tahir alias Tahri of Hawaili Lakha, Okara, and Tariq Mehmood of Lakhanki village, Kasur.

Police seized looted items including prize bonds and jewellery, two weapons and a motorcycle from the spot. The police vehicle was also a bit damaged by the firing.

Wahla said police record showed that Tahir was involved in bank robberies in Okara and at least 11 cases of house robberies and street crime had been traced against them in police stations of Defence A and Defence B in current year.

He said Tahir’s brother was currently in jail in connection with a murder case.

Police have registered a case and shifted the bodies for autopsy.
