PIA flight: a mixed bag

THIS is apropos Akhtar Naqvi’s letter ‘PIA flight a mixed bag’ (Aug 13).

It is a pity that our airline has now been reduced to a success story of yore. Luckily their planes are still flying internationally, though with certain restrictions in some European countries.

I think the writer was fortunate to have boarded his return flight from Karachi, because elsewhere there could be an additional risk of the deadly dengue mosquitoes.

I wouldn’t be surprised if the authorities concerned some day come up with a claim, like our honourable railways minister, to give him just a fleet of 100 new Jumbo 747s to teach us how efficiently he can run the airline.

And there still remains, as yet another unexplored possibility, of a minister coming up with a theory that the stories about PIA are nothing more than ‘Indian, American and Israeli’ propaganda or a conspiracy against their ever-efficient government.

Majority of Pakistanis from North America have stopped travelling by PIA because of poor service and flight delays. In late 1980's and early 1990's, PIA used to fly out of New York every day, all full flights. Now two flights a week. Other airlines are growing where as PIA is going down. Emirates, Etihad, Qatar and other airlines are first choice of Pakistanis because of superior service. PIA simply cannot compete with other airlines. For PIA to improve, first its staff and management must admit that they are not a world class airline anymore and second they must work sincerely for the good of the airline. I do not think either of these two things will happen. Eventually, PIA will just become a third tier airline.

Unfortunately all of our institutions are getting ruined because of corruption and bad administration. PIA is no more reliable for traveling and still they sale expensive air tickets.

What has become of the once best airline in the world. Like other institutes, PIA has too been eaten up by none other than our own. What a shame.

Kudos Dawn for publishing such a meaningless and shallow letter to the editor. Where is the class that Dawn is known for? Personally, I take pains to give some comments on articles and news items I read on internet edition of Dawn. I am sure my comments are much better in content and presentation than the above letter. Yet, my comments are seldom published. Is there a consistent policy about what to publish and what to take out? No need to publish this comment, please. However, be sure to circulate it to those who screen out Letters to the Editor for publishing or dropping.
