LONDON, Aug 5: Andy Murray failed to add a second Olympic gold following his victory in the men’s singles event earlier on Sunday when he and Laura Robson lost to Max Mirnyi and Victoria Azarenka of Belarus in the final of the mixed doubles 2-6, 6-3, 10-8 on another action-packed day at the London Games.

Victory for the Belarusian top seeds all but ended Britain’s hopes of two gold medals on the final day of the tennis tournament.

In the only track cycling final on Sunday, Lasse Norman Hansen of Denmark won the gold medal in the men’s omnium after surviving a crash in one of the six races of the event. Hansen hit the wooden boards in a curve after connecting with the rear wheel of Britain’s Edward Clancy in the scratch race but escaped uninjured and went back on the track.

He managed to rejoin the peloton after regaining a lap and finished sixth at the line. Hansen then produced a full-on effort in the 1km time trial to win the inaugural Olympic title in the multidiscipline event with a total of 27 points.

It was only the second of the six events in the velodrome so far where Britain have not won gold.

In women’s weightlifting, China’s Zhou Lulu traded world records with Russia’s Tatiana Kashirina to win gold in the super heavyweight category while her compatriot Wu Minxia won a diving gold medal in the women’s 3-metre springboard.

The results put China back on top of the medals table mid-way through day nine with 30 golds to the United States’ 27 while  Britain were in third place with 16.

Meanwhile, Iran won their first gold at the Games when five-time world champion Hamid Soryan Reihanpour won the Greco-Roman wrestling title on Sunday, beating Azerbaijan’s Rovshan Bayramov for the 55kg title.
