LONDON, Aug 1: Li Xiaoxia extended China’s domination in women’s singles table tennis by clinching the Olympic gold medal with a victory over team-mate Ding Ning in Wednesday’s final.

Li won 11-8, 14-12, 8-11, 11-6, 11-4 at London’s ExCeL. Singapore’s Feng Tianwei beat Japanese 19-year-old Kasumi Ishikawa for the bronze medal.

China has won every women’s singles gold medal in table tennis since the game was introduced at the Olympics in 1988. It has won 21 of 25 gold medals in the sport and is expected to sweep all four gold medals in London in singles and team play.—Agencies
