KARACHI, July 23: Condemning what he called the genocide of Muslims in Myanmar, Chief Minister’s Adviser on Rehabilitation Haleem Adil Shaikh has called upon the government to take steps to protect the Muslim minority community living there.

Speaking at a press conference at the Karachi Press Club on Monday, Mr Shaikh, a leader of the Pakistan Muslim League (Q), urged the United Nations and human rights organisations in general and Islamic countries in particular to raise the issue with the Myanmar government so that ‘ethnic cleansing’ being carried out there could be stopped.

He also criticised the Bangladesh government for closing its borders for the fleeing Burmese Muslims and pushing them back into Myanmar.

He said that the PML was planning to organise a roundtable conference of all the political parties to discuss this serious issue so that a consensus be developed and a unified stand be taken on the issue and the Muslim brethren could be protected.
