THIS refers to Muhammad Amir’s letter ‘Higgs boson and Pakistani scientist’ (July 12). I feel sorry that the Pakistani media did not adequately cover the discovery of Higgs boson as predicted by Dr Abdus Salam.

This to me is not surprising as even some of the school books that I have seen hardly mention his name for reasons we all know.

However, one should not feel sad about it as science is an international endeavour and contributes to a body of knowledge which belongs to all mankind. Nationhood, on the other hand, is purely a man-made concept and a bad one as it often leads to endless wars and conflicts.

Recently, China became the first nation to send and bring back three astronauts. It was a great technical achievement, but hardly covered in detail by the local electronic media.

Science has a low priority in today’s Pakistan, but you can see plenty of programmes on palmistry and astrology, if you care to see our TV channels.
