SRINAGAR: An officer in Indian-controlled Kashmir says suspected rebels fighting against Indian rule fired on paramilitary soldiers in the disputed region's main city, wounding at least seven soldiers.

A spokesman for the paramilitary Central Reserve Police Force, Sudhir Kumar, says two militants on a motorcycle fired at a truck that was dropping soldiers for patrol duty Wednesday morning in Srinagar.

Kumar says the area has been cordoned off and troops are searching for the attackers.
