THE Sindh government recently announced that educational institutions in the province would observe summer vacations from July 1 to August 31 this year. The news had come out of the blue and it had shocked all the stakeholders.

Unfortunately, our policymakers have not analysed and have made an illogical decision. Children are our tomorrow’s future.

The reasons given for this change are not justified. With this decision they are trying to prepare our children slack, sleeping at home and doing the least possible during Ramazan. It is inconsistent with the very spirit of Ramazan.

On the other hand, policymakers are trying to put the cart before the horse. Both O and A level schools are about to finish their 2011-12 academic session.

How can they start their new academic session without preparation? It takes time to analyse where schools are hitting on all cylinders, where they are ‘missing’, and how to make adjustments to get them operating smoothly.

Decisions should not be taken on short-term basis as Ramazan can happen during any season and starts on a different day. It is suggested that our government must not lose sight of the original purpose of Ramazan and rethink the concept of work in Ramazan.
