THE PML(N) is claiming to be a great champion of the supremacy of judiciary and is threatening to launch street protests and a ‘Long March’ to force Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani to tender his resignation and hold general elections.

We cannot forget the past. When the PML(N)’s leader, Nawaz Sharif, was facing a similar situation, party members did not hesitate going to the extent of launching a mob attack on the Supreme Court to prevent it from convicting prime minister Nawaz Sharif under similar circumstances. Where were their lofty ideals then? Is the judiciary to be supported only when it suits them? Mr Gilani has repeatedly stated both inside and outside the parliament that his government respects the judiciary and would implement all its judgments. But when it comes to deeds, we feel disturbed.

No doubt, Prime Minister Gilani has the right to appeal but ethically he has no right to continue in office, even though he may be intending to file an appeal against his conviction.

Under similar circumstances, in any other country, the prime minister or even a minister of the cabinet would resign simply on his being charged for a criminal offence.

The judiciary is the only institution left in Pakistan which still commands respect and credibility, so it is time people stopped using it for their own self-interest.
