Oil, gas discovered in tribal area

Published December 11, 2002

ISLAMABAD, Dec 10: Pakistan has made a major oil and gas discovery in Karak district, a tribal district bordering Afghanistan about 80km off Kohat district, a senior government official told Dawn.

Total reserves and data about the oil and gas production from the well will be announced on Wednesday (today) by the petroleum minister Naurez Shakoor, the official said.

A Hungarian company MOL is the operator of the well named Manzalai near Gurgary. This would be the first hydrocarbon discovery in the Fata and could open new prospects of oil and gas discoveries in the tribal belt bordering oil-rich Iran and war-torn Afghanistan.
