CHAKWAL, May 12: A man was booked on the charge of poisoning his nearly four-year-old son to death, sources told Dawn on Saturday.

M.T., a resident of Uthwal village, who is currently residing in Chakwal city, got married with A.B. in 2006. The couple got a son who was named Rehan Ali.

As the relation soured between the two, A.B. got divorce through court in 2008. After eight months of divorce, she gave birth to another male child who was named Rohan Ali.

M.T. had filed a suit in a family court to get possession of his two children. On Friday, on the directives of the court, A.B. brought them to the court so that their father could meet them. The meeting took place at 11am. During the meeting he gave juice, chocolates and candies to both his sons.

The elder child, Rehan, refused to accept the presents as he was prohibited by his mother and maternal grandfather. But the younger one, Rohan, accepted them. As the two boys were brought back home, Rohan went to bed and slept.

When the child did not wake up in the evening, his mother rushed to the room and tried to wake him up but he did not move.

The family was on tenterhooks to see the plight of Rohan and he was rushed to the District Headquarters (DHQ) hospital where doctors pronounced him dead.

Abdul Khaliq, the maternal grandfather of Rohan, lodged a compliant with Saddar police that his grandson was given poisonous juice by M.T. He also accused that he used to torture A.B. which led her to take divorce.

“He had earlier attempted to poison Rehan also who was saved as timely treatment was given to him then”, he blamed. Police have registered a case against the accused and started investigation.

“We are waiting for the medical report which would ascertain the cause of death”, Investigation Officer Raja Mohammad Aslam told Dawn. He vowed the accused would be arrested soon.

Dr Kamran who conducted the autopsy said the medical samples had been sent to Lahore for chemical examination.

“It would be premature to say anything before the report is issued”, he said.

When approached, the accused M.T. denied all the accusations leveled against him. “I could never think of killing my own son”, he said.

Rohan Ali, the deceased, was recently admitted to a private school in Nursery class.
