KARACHI, May 1: An activist of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement was among the two young men shot dead by assailants on the Karimabad bridge, within the remit of the Gulberg police station, late on Monday night, police said.

The incident took place on the bridge in the Federal B Area, where two suspects on a motorcycle opened fire on them as a result of which Ahsan Abbas Naqvi, 33, and Ziaul Hassan suffered serious bullet injuries.

Police shifted them to the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital (ASH) for medical treatment but both young men died during treatment.

A large number of party workers and friends gathered at the hospital after learning about the incident.

SP of Liaquatabad division Noman Siddiqui said the two men were on their separate motorcycles when two suspects riding another two-wheeler kicked them, causing them to fall on the road.

Later, the suspects targeted them by opening fire and fled, the SP added.

Police said Ahsan Abbas Naqvi was a resident of Block 19, F. B Area, and was also the secretary of Anjuman Gulzar-i-Hyderi, while Ziaul Hassan was an active worker of the MQM’s unit 144.

Following the killing, tension gripped several areas. All major shops and markets were closed due to the uncertain condition in the locality.

Funerals of both young men were held at the Ancholi Imambargah.
