ISLAMABAD: Interior Minister Rehman Malik on Saturday announced the lifting of curfew and restoration of mobile phone service in Gilgit from Saturday night, DawnNews reported.

Speaking to media representatives with Chief Minister Gilgit-Baltistan Mehdi Shah after a meeting reviewing Gilgit’s law and order situation, the interior minister said that several suspected individuals had been arrested following acts of violence in the region.

Malik assured that those found innocent would be released soon.

He said that the police force’s strength in Gilgit would be increased to 10,000 from the current 5,000.

Frontier Corps (FC) and Rangers personnel have also been directed to assist the Gilgit-Baltistan government to maintain peace in the area, he added.

He said the Federal Investigation Agency’s office would also be set up in Gilgit as part of efforts to improve the situation.

“Religious scholars were also being taken on board in order to promote religious harmony in Gilgit and other areas,” Malik added.
