LAHORE, April 26: The organised crimes police claimed on Thursday to have arrested 25 members of four criminals’ gangs and seized from them cash, jewellery, motorcycles, cloth, electronics and illegal weapons worth Rs12.047 million.

Among the accused are a police constable, three women, as many proclaimed offenders and three history-sheeters.

Police also arrested two members of a gang involved in two bank heists in the city.

DIG Investigation Ali Aamir Malik, flanked by CIA SP Captain Liaquat Ali Malik (retired), told a news conference that 25 members of the Khalid Hussain gang, the Ashraf alias Achu gang, the Mohsin gang and the Waqar Anjum alias Viki gang had confessed to committing 64 incidents of dacoity, robbery, street crime, burglary, snatching mobile towers’ batteries and motorcycle theft in different parts of the city during preliminary interrogation.

He said the Waqar gang was also involved in motorcycle theft in Sheikhupura district.

The DIG said the police seized Rs1.1 million in cash, some foreign currency, 70 tolas of gold, 10 cell phones, 26 motorcycles, 66 batteries of mobile towers, 20 bolts of cloth, electronics and illegal weapons and bullets.

He said constable Mohsin Zeeshan, who had formed his own gang, was posted at the Lorry Adda police station and his gang shot at and wounded Rana Afraz Haris of Johar Town on resistance in Islampura in March 2012.

CIA SP Liaquat Ali Malik told reporters that robbers’ gang comprising three women had looted cash and jewellery worth Rs6 million from the Shadman residence of carpet trader Sheikh Munir on April 3, 2012.

He said police traced the suspects led by maid Rehana within 24 hours and recovered cash, foreign currency and 70 tolas of jewellery. He said gold ornaments were included the dowry of Munir’s daughter.

The SP said the CIA police also arrested two criminals Raza Khan and Waseem Haroon who confessed to committing bank robberies in a UBL bank branch in Huma Block of Iqbal Town and a Meezan Bank branch in Chuhng.

He said the suspects, who are Pathans, were taken from the Islamabad police for interrogation, adding that their at least 12 members were still at large.

He said the Islamabad police earlier took the suspects into custody to interrogate them in connection with a bank robbery.
