KARACHI, April 18: A watchman and a 50-year-old woman were killed while resisting attempts of armed mugging in different parts of the city on Wednesday, police said.

Shahid Rizvi was driving back home with his wife, Umme Kulsoom, after visiting some relative when they were followed by a car near Jheel Park, said an official at the Ferozabad police station.

As Mr Rizvi sped up, his car came under a gun attack, he said. “The firing left the couple wounded but he managed to escape,” said Ferozabad SHO Inspector Ejaz Khawja.

“Both were shifted to a private hospital on Stadium Road where the woman died of wounds. Mr Rizvi underwent a surgery and is now said to be stable.”

He said the police after recording the statement of the victim arrived at a conclusion that the killing was the result of armed mugging attempt.”

The couple resided in an apartment in Block 6 of PECHS and returning home in the early hours of Wednesday after seeing a relative in a nearby area when they were attacked.

“We have registered an FIR (213/2012) under Sections 397 (robbery or dacoity, with attempt to cause death or grievous hurt), 398 (attempt to commit robbery or dacoity when armed with deadly weapon) and 34 (common intention) of the Pakistan Penal Code against unidentified suspects on a complaint of Mr Rizvi,” said the inspector.

Shortly afterwards, a 60-year-old unarmed watchman of a medicine factory was gunned down in SITE, police said.

It emerged during investigation that at least three gunmen tried to barge into the factory but Khanzada put up resistance and a scuffle ensued, said an official at the SITE-B police station.

He said the gunmen fired multiple shots. The watchman sustained a bullet wound to the head that proved fatal.

The official said that the attackers fled without taking away any valuables from the factory.

According to the police, the victim, father of six, originally hailed from Peshawar, but he had been working and living here in the same industrial unit for the past several years.
