ISLAMABAD: The opposition parties in the Parliament on Thursday sought assurance from Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani and the government for implementing resolution regarding re-engagement with the US and Nato in letter and spirit.
After the resolution containing recommendations of Parliamentary Committee on National Security (PCNS) was moved to the House, the leaders of the opposition parties quoted the fate of previous resolutions and urged upon the government to stand firm for sovereignty and dignity of the parliament and the nation.
Leader of the Opposition in National Assembly Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan questioned as why the previous unanimously adopted resolutions could not be implemented.
He said the opposition has made the government withdraw all the clauses from the previous draft of resolution those were related the administrative affairs of the government.
Nisar said the government should actively pursue the gas pipeline project with Turkemenitsan, reiterating the strong support to Pak-Iran gas pipeline project.
He said the government should demand the US authorities that Dr Afia Siddiqui be repatriated to Pakistan so that she may complete her sentence in a Pakistani jail.
He also demanded of the US government to bring Raymond Davis to justice as had been assured by the US Senator John Kerry during his visit to Pakistan.
JUI-F Chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman said the country's economy, defence and politics had been under external pressure.
But, the unanimous adoption of the resolution will send a message that Pakistan had never been a strategic partner with any foreign state.
He said if the government forms any partnership with the any state, it would have to follow these terms of engagements.
Fazlur Rehman said even the government cannot take any administrative steps regarding foreign and security policies setting aside the terms of engagement carved out unanimously by all political forces.
