KARACHI, March 25: Nomi Qamar, a former member of Pakistan Davis Cup team, annexed the men’s singles crown in the Pakistan Day open tennis tournament at Defence Authority Club on Saturday evening.

Nomi, who earns his livelihood by playing the circuit and coaching, powered to 6-3, 6-3 victory over Omer.

Incidentally, there was no prize money on offer in the event which was sponsored by a private bank. However, prizes in kind were given to the players.

Maheen Dada outwitted Sara Ahmed in straight sets to land the ladies singles title. She won the battle 6-4, 6-2.

The juniors’ under-18 crown went to Talha Zubair who accounted for Aqeel Shabbir 6-0, 6-0 while teenagers Dawar Rehan and Shazil Malik picked up the under-14 and under-11 titles respectively.

Meanwhile, the duo of Imran Ahmed and Reza Ali Mirza overcame brothers’ combination of Asad Ali Bhagat and Ali Hasan Bhagat 6-2, 2-6, 11-9 to claim the 35 plus doubles title.

Final results: Men’s singles: Nomi Qamar bt Omer Shahid 6-3, 6-3.

Juniors’ under-18 singles: Talha Zubair bt Aqeel Shabbir 6-0, 6-0.

Ladies singles: Maheen Dada bt Sara Ahmed 6-4, 6-2.

Men’s doubles: Jalil Khan and Ali Hasan Bhagat bt Nomi Qamar and Talha Zubair 6-1, 6-2.

Boys’ and girls’ under-14 singles: Dawar Rehan bt Hasan Farooq 6-2, 2-6, 10-6.

Boys’ and girls’ under-11 singles: Shazil Malik bt Mohammad Dada 4-6, 6-2, 10-7.

35 plus doubles: Imran Ahmed and Reza Ali Mirza bt Asad Ali Bhagat and Ali Hasan Bhagat 6-2, 2-6, 11-9.
