LAHORE, March 19: Besides human losses, motorists suffer monetary losses worth Rs100 million in road accidents across the country annually and the National Highways and Motorway Police (NH&MP) are committed to reducing the number of accidents to the lowest level by maintaining better discipline on roads through education and constructive enforcement.

NH&MP Inspector-General (IG) Wajid Ali Khan Durrani said this while addressing a seminar titled “Traffic Discipline in Pakistan” and graduation ceremony of the 4th batch of Junior Patrol Officers (JPOs) at Sheikhupura Training College on Monday. The IG said it was better discipline that only 156 accidents were reported from national highways and motorways in 2010 as compared to 26,000 that took place in Karachi alone.

He stressed ensuring traffic discipline on roads not only to save precious lives and properties but also place Pakistan on the list of law-abiding countries.

The NH&MP’s Mobile Education Unit was imparting road safety education by visiting educational institutions, corporate offices, bus and goods transport terminals to enhance traffic sense among road users, he added.

NH&MP officers, media personnel, children of different educational institutions and a large number of people from different walks of life attended the seminar and a walk.

Meanwhile, 151 male and 28 female JPOs completed the basic recruit course.

JPO Saddat Hasan took all-round first position, Shabana Kausar second and Zahid Zulfiqar secured third position.

In firing, JPO Muhammad Idrees took 1st position while JPO Sheraz Husain took first position in male’s parade category and Gulshan Bibi secured first position in female’s parade category.

The IG distributed prizes among the graduates and also congratulated them on successful completion of their training course.
