Benazir for action against turncoats

LAHORE, Dec 3: Chairperson Benazir Bhutto said on Tuesday PPP legislators who had changed their loyalties were corrupt and shameless.

She directed her party leaders to hold such leaders accountable by holding protest meetings in their constituencies after Eid.

In a telephonic address to the participants of a party meeting, the self-exiled former prime minister also called for action against the defectors.

The ‘turncoats’ have already been issued notices on the expiry of which they would be proceeded against after four days. Those who have accepted ministries, have been asked to relinquish charge to save themselves from action.

Party’s acting secretary-general Raza Rabbani said after a meeting on Tuesday that his party was thinking of requisitioning a session of the National Assembly and boycotting other assemblies unless a session of the Sindh Assembly was called.

Deputy information secretary Altaf Qureshi and provincial information secretary Naveed Chaudhry were also present on the occasion.

Mr Rabbani said he had come to the people of Punjab to let them know that Sindh was being discriminated against for which they should express solidarity with the Sindhis.

It was regrettable, he said, that chief ministers for three provinces had been elected but the government was still to call a session of the Sindh Assembly. The Sindhi people would be justified in regarding themselves as second rate citizens.

Mr Rabbani said the PPP had emerged as the biggest party in Sindh with 67 members. But, he said, it was deplorable that efforts were being made to bring chief minister of another party.

In the past, he recalled, Jam Sadiq was imposed on Sindh after which Syed Muzaffar Shah was brought to the fore. At present when the PPP had majority in the Sindh Assembly, Arbab Rahim was being tipped for the top slot.

The PPP leader said his party was holding talks with other parties in an attempt to form its government.

He demanded that either a session of the assembly be held before Eid, or at least a date be set for the purpose.

Mr Rabbani said unless the Sindh Assembly started working, the Senate elections could not be held.
