GILGIT, Feb 24: Pakistan Air Force won the 6th Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee Ski Cup 2012 played at Nultar Ski Resort on Friday.

Some twelve teams took part in the contest for the trophy held in the Naltar valley, which is some 40km west of the Gilgit city.

Commander Force Command, Northern Areas, Maj-Gen Ikram ul Haq was the chief guest at the closing ceremony.

Skiers from different teams demonstrated their skills by displaying their mastery in various skiing maneuvers.

Later, Maj-Gen Ikram ul Haq awarded medals and prizes to the prominent skiers of the tournament besides giving away the coveted trophy to the team captain of PAF.  He also announced Rs300,000 for the National Ski Federation on behalf of the chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff.

In Giant Slalom event, sepoy Zia Jan of Pakistan Army won gold medal, while Liaqat and senior tech Mohammad Abbas of PAF received silver and bronze medals, respectively. In Super Giant event, senior tech Sarwar Khan of PAF won gold medal, sepoy Abdullah Jan of Pakistan Army won silver medal and Liaqat of PAF won bronze medal.

It is worth mentioning that skiing in Pakistan remained largely under-developed until the creation of Ski Federation of Pakistan which was founded in December 1990. Due to dedicated efforts of the federation skiing became accessible to the youth from all across the country and training and participation for competitive skiing was offered to all.

IN-CAMERA SESSION: In its short parliamentary history the Gilgit-Baltistan Legislative Assembly on Friday held an in-camera session to discuss the law and order situation in the region.

The session was presided over by Deputy Speaker Jamil Ahmed which began after Juma prayers.

The official sources said that Bashir Ahmed, Minister for Works, who headed a parliamentary peace committee, presented its recommendations for establishment of durable peace in the region.

PROTEST: The residents of Gilgit city took to streets on Friday against hours long loadshedding in the city and its adjoining areas for last one month.

Roads were blocked at several points where tyres were burnt and traffic was suspended.
