LAHORE, Feb 22: Senior journalist Muhammad Arif died of renal failure on Wednesday. He was 75.

Affectionately known as Arif Bhai to journalists, the elderly journalist had been bed-ridden for the last one month or so. He was the father of Dawn staff reporter Wajih Ahmad Sheikh.

His funeral will be taken out on Thursday (today) after Asr prayers from 28 A-Block, New Chauburji Park, near Khajoorwali Masjid. His funeral prayers will be offered at Janazgah on Lytton Road.

Arif Bhai was the edition in-charge of Urdu daily Musawwat when it was forcibly closed down during the regime of Gen Ziaul Haq. He remained in jail for quite some time after courting arrest against the closure of the newspaper, said to be the mouthpiece of the PPP.

Later, he joined Karachi-based Urdu daily Hurriyat as its correspondent in Lahore. After closure of Hurriyat, M. Arif joined daily Dawn, Lahore, where he served till 1997 when he lost his sight after an operation.
