MMA awards ticket for Senate seat

Published December 2, 2002

SWABI, Dec 1: The MMA has awarded the ticket for the Senate election to a former provincial general secretary of the JUI-F.

The MMA sources said that the district Shoora had forwarded the name of Advocate Najeem Khan for the Senate election to the provincial Shoora and the leaders of the JUI-S and JI supported him.

The name of Mr Khan was moved to the provincial Shoora after he succeeded in getting nine votes from a 10-member district Shoora in his favour against one for the other aspirant, Maulana Mohammed Amin.

Sources said that JUI-F chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman had earlier assured Mr Khan of support for moving his name for the MMA ticket for Senate election.

They said that NWFP Chief Minister Mohammed Akram Khan Durrani visited Swabi after Oct 10 election and assured Mr Khan that he would get the MMA ticket for Senate election to become the first senator from the district.
