RAWALPINDI, Feb 16: A pregnant woman hit by a stray bullet of celebratory firing at a wedding overnight died in hospital on Thursday after giving birth, two week prematurely, to a boy.

Doctors at the Benazir Bhutto Hospital where poor Almas Samreen, 35, was rushed to could only report that her son was "stable".

Almas was visiting her parents in Ammarpura Mohallah when the madness of celebratory fire hit her in the head while her husband Abdul Aziz was taking her home.

Police arrested bridegroom's father Sagheer Ahmed from the house where the marriage ceremony was taking place while the bridegroom's cousin Yasir Aslam who allegedly fired his gun in the air in jubilation fled the scene after the tragedy.

Punjab government has strictly banned use of fire arms at wedding ceremonies. Police said the father of the bridegroom was arrested and raids for the arrest of accused were underway.

In another incident, Tanzeela Sultana, wife of Mohammad Azam was shot dead by her son-in-law in her house in Kahuta.

Mohammad Azam said in his statement recorded with the police that his daughter was married with Munir Ahmed and had returned back to his house after she developed differences with her husband.

Last night, her husband came to their house to take his angry wife with him. He was provoked after his mother-in-law taunted him and refused to send her daughter with him.

The complainant said Munir pulled out his pistol and opened fire on his mother-in-law killing her on the spot.

Later the alleged killer escaped from the scene.
