KARACHI: Former Prime Minister H.S. Suhrawardy, 69, was arrested here yesterday under the Security of Pakistan Act. A Press note issued by the Government said that Mr Suhrawardy continued to indulge in activities prejudicial to the integrity and safety of Pakistan. “Mr Suhrawardy has openly associated with anti-Pakistan elements, both within and outside the country,” the Press note aid.

The note described Mr Suhrawardy’s activities in the recent past as “fraught with such danger to the security and safety of Pakistan that one could fairly describe them as being treasonable”.

Mr Suhrawardy recently returned from a one-month tour of East and West Pakistan. He was said to have met friends and political associates during the tour.

The order of internment was served on Mr Suhrawardy by the DIG Police, Mian Bashir Ahmad, at the former’s Victoria Road residence at 7am. The chief of the defunct Awami League was still in bed when the order was served on him. He had slept late. He was reading a book till 2am.

Diplomat with a difference

KARACHI: It is rare that a diplomat of one country also carries the passport of another country, but Mr M.S. Sabbagh, the first Syrian diplomat to be posted in Pakistan since the union of his country with Egypt, has that distinction.

It is also rare that a diplomat arrives in the country to which he is accredited without his credentials, but Mr Sabbagh has. Reasons: separation of Syria from the United Arab Republic late last year.
