Man kills wife, self

SWABI, Jan 13: A mentally disturbed man allegedly shot dead his wife and later committed suicide here on Friday.

Officials at Kalu Khan police station told this correspondent that the incident occurred in the Asota area.

Registering FIR, Farman Ali, brother of the deceased, Shaukat Ali, accused his brother of killing his estranged wife inside their house when he opened fire over her with a pistol. He said no other person was present in the house at the time of the incident. —Correspondent

Illegal hunting of fish

MANSEHRA, Jan 13: Illegal hunting of fish through electric wires and explosives has diminished the local species ‘Mullah’ in the Kunhar River here.

The illegal practice continues with no check at Gharihabibullah, Balakot and lower parts of Kaghan valley.

A fish seller told this correspondent that Mullah was diminishing in the river as the hunting with the wire and explosives had risen to an alarming level during the past several years.Prices of local fish have also jumped from Rs400 per kg to Rs600 per kg in Mansehra district. “Because of dearth of local fish our business has come to the brink of collapse,” said a fish seller.

He said this local fish that was second to trout was delicious in taste as compared to Tarbala and other boneless fish that were brought from Karachi and other parts of the country. —Correspondent

Man killed on road

NOWSHERA, Jan 13: A man was killed and his friend suffered serious injuries when a van they were traveling in collided with a passenger coach here on Friday.

The police said Dr Attaullah, son of Pervez, and Atif Shah, son of Faqir Shah, residents of Shaikhan Pabbi, were going to Islamabad in a Suzuki van (H 4743). The van collided with a passenger coach near Azakhel. As a result, Dr Attaullah was killed on the spot while his companion sustained serious injuries.

The injured was taken to district headquarters hospital Nowshera. Pabbi police station registered a case and started investigation. —Correspondent

Paintings exhibition

PESHAWAR, Jan 13: While paying rich tributes to people of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa through his canvassing work, artist Jimmy Engineer has determined to hold more such exhibitions to develop soft image of the province.

“I have tried to convey message of peace and importance of the area through the paintings exhibitions and cultural promotion events,” said Jimmy Engineer, while talking to reporters here at Peshawar Press Club on Friday. He donated a landscape painting picture to Peshawar Press Club, in which he tried to portray different historic places of the country, including Gilgit-Baltistan.

Mr Jimmy said the exhibition’s basic aim was to regain cultural activities and tourists’ attention towards this province. He further said he highlighted different aspects of life in his paintings and that he planned to organise such exhibitions in Islamabad as well.

He said people of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa had given immense response to his paintings and appreciated the art work. —Bureau Report

Rally against outages

PESHAWAR, Jan 13: PPP-S on Friday took out a rally at Sher Shah Suri Road against the excessive loadshedding, price hike and urged the rulers to admit failure and step down.

The protesters led by the party’s provincial president MPA Sikandar Hayat Khan Sherpao were holding banners and placards inscribed with anti-government, anti-loadshedding slogans.

Talking to media persons outside Peshawar Press Club the MPA said since the ruling parities had come to power the government had increased the prices of petroleum products, daily use items and gas. The rulers, he said had focused attention on accumulation of money and were least bothered to solve the problems being faced by the poor people.

The people, said Mr Sherpao, were enduring 16-18 hours power loadshedding with gas supply was also next to nil in most parts of the province. He said the energy crisis had also led to closure of industrial units and hundreds of people had been rendered jobless. —Bureau Report

Female education

MANSEHRA, Jan 13: The students of Fatimatuz Zahra Girl’s Degree College presented skits to highlight hurdles in the way of female education and other issues faced by women in the society.

The 10th mother’s day function of the college was held in college auditorium the other day.

The students though their performance communicated messages regarding importance of female education and highlighted traditions and customs, which barred women from getting educated.

Various forms of violence the women were subjected to were also condemned in skits and message was passed on to the audience to give due rights to girls and women in accordance with the Islamic teachings.

Speaking on the occasion vice chancellor of Hazara University Dr Syed Sakhawat Shah and principal of the college Malik Zahid Khalid said women education was highly important in the contemporary era where the wars were fought and won by science and technology. —Correspondent

Development schemes

PESHAWAR, Jan 13: Deputy Speaker, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly, Khushdil Khan, has asked government departments to amend policies relating to development schemes to meet the requirements of the present era. He was presiding over a high-level meeting of the irrigation department on Friday.

The meeting reviewed progress on different schemes of tube-wells, de-silting of canals and other flood protection schemes in KP-10 constituency and stressed the need for completion of incomplete schemes at the earliest.

Mr Khushdil directed construction of separate room for the watchman of tube-wells to arrest the theft incidents of the power transformers.

The meeting decided immediate installation of transformers of tube-wells and completion of other works to hand over their responsibilities to operators.

The meeting also reviewed matters relating to construction of small dams and agreed on inspection of different sites in this regard.—APP
